The Big Lottery has been very good for The Honeytones over the last few years. We have secured a total of almost £20,000 and it is these wonderful grants that have enabled us to purchase almost everything that we own.

There remains however one essential item that the band now needs more than anything else and that is transport.

We currently rely on volunteer effort to ensure that the minibus owned by the company responsible for the care of most of the band members, is available when we need it.

But the residential site where the band members live is earmarked for closure and the residents will live in supported accomodation. Of course, living in a more independent way is an aspiration for most of us so it is a very exciting prospect for many residents. It will however leave the band without any form of transport.

The biggest problem for The Honeytones is that when we have no transport, we simply will not be able to afford to travel to perform for whoever would like us. We don’t charge for what we do and we don’t want to change that principle.

We have had wonderful feedback from folk who have been at our performances, from Presidents of Rotary International to inmates of prisons we have performed in.

We were successful in reaching the televised finals of The ITV Peoples Millions contest last year but we were beaten in the public vote by Camborne Town Band.

Undeterred, we submitted another project to The Peoples Millions this year. We had what we think was a very interesting project to submit which would have involved the band in continuing their Prison gigs but also developing music workshops. The project could only succeed if we were able to aquire our own minibus, the purchase of which was central to our submission to the Big Lottery.

It has been confirmed that our project has not made it onto the shortlist so we will once more put our thinking caps on to see how we progress our ambition to purchase our own minibus.
